Unit Details

• Unit: 1W MedSurg (Cost Center 3427)
• Beds: 28 private beds
• Patient Types: Mainly post-surgical and orthopedic patients
• Patient Monitoring:

  • Telemetry patients monitored remotely (no monitors on unit)
  • No nurse's read strips
• Drips: Heparin and possibly MSO4 for comfort measures; no cardiac drips
• Ventilation: Bipap, Cpap, High Flow managed by Respiratory Therapy

Staffing & Ratios

• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:6-7
• Charge Nurse: Clinical Manager Mon-Sat acts as charge nurse and nurse manager; resource nurse on nights takes full patient assignment
• Nurse Aides: 2 CNAs on day shifts; no CNAs on nights

Shifts & Scheduling

• Shift Length: 12-hour shifts for RNs (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM; 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
• CNA Shifts: 8-hour shifts only (6:00 AM - 2:30 PM & 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM)
• Scheduling: Self-scheduling and blocked schedules allowed if unit needs are met
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (EOW), including 2 Fridays per schedule (often grouped Fri/Sat/Sun)
• Holidays: Work included in permanent staff holiday rotation

Orientation & Floating

• Orientation: 1 shift with a preceptor on the floor
• Floating: Only to other MedSurg units

Additional Notes

• Must be comfortable caring for both "clean" and "dirty" patients (COVID patients housed on unit in separate hallways)
• Scrub color: Navy blue (jackets must also be navy blue)
• 50-mile radius rule applies for submissions
• Any professional license issues must be disclosed at time of submission
