Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Lafayette, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
- Required Experience: Minimum 1.5 years in specialty
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first timers accepted)
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract

- Pending License: Not accepted; must have Indiana state license and required certifications in hand before starting
- Holiday Work: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
Shift Information
- 8 and 10 hour shifts totaling 40 hours per week
- 3 shifts of 12 hours totaling 36 hours per week
- 4 shifts of 12 hours totaling 48 hours per week
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or RQI acceptable (required for all candidates)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – Preferred
- NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale) – Preferred, required for ER RNs
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM)
Skillset & Unit Information
- Med/Surg experience including:
- Pre/post neurosurgery care
- Total joint replacements
- Trauma Level I-IV
- IV starts required
- Ortho trauma preferred
- Dysrhythmia interpretation/management preferred
- Units include Orthopedic, GYN, Urology, Neurosurgery, Medical patients, Total Joint Replacements, Continuous Bladder Irrigation, Hysterectomy, Chest Tubes, ENT Surgery, Bone Fractures, and various medical diagnoses (COPD, Pneumonia, UTI, Cellulitis, COVID, Small Bowel Obstruction, etc.)

Licensing & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Indiana RN license required (online verification within 30 days before start)
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background checks including 7 years of residence/work history, criminal, sex offender, and education verification
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved)
- Immunizations and titers required:
- TB test within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations accepted)
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations accepted)
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Flu vaccination/documentation required for flu season (no declinations accepted)
- Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and unit competency exams
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with appropriate supervisory titles
- Employment application covering last 7 years with explanations for gaps over 30 days
- Skills checklist within 12 months and annually thereafter
Additional Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities after 11/30/24 except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
