Job Opportunity: Acute Care Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Specialty: Registered Nurse - Acute Care Float
Shift: 4x12-hour night shifts per week (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
Start Date: Target February 23, 2026 (no late start dates)
Patient Population: Adults
Staffing Ratio: 1:5 (days, nights, weekends)
Weekend Coverage: Every other weekend, approximately 2 weekend shifts per scheduling period
Rotating Shifts: No
Float Requirement: Yes, float to acute inpatient units and potentially Emergency Department boarders
Unit & Clinical Environment
- Acute inpatient with telemetry, including transplant, oncology, surgical services, acute rehab, GI/GU, neurology
- Potential float to Emergency Department for admitted patients waiting for beds
- Unit Systems: Omnicell
- Documentation System: EPIC
- Provider Support: Interpretation Services, IV Teams, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Rapid Response Teams, Respiratory Services, Social Services, Transportation, Unit Secretary
- Special Equipment: Alaris Pumps, Kangaroo Pumps, Stryker beds, Posey Alarms, Glucometers
Required Certifications & Licenses
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
- NYS Department of Health Registered Nurse License (hard copy with green border, signed)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only (check unit requirements)
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit (PALS, NRP, Chemotherapy)
- Online licensure verification required within 30 days of start and after any 30+ day break in service
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of acute care nursing experience required
- Prior travel experience not explicitly required, but first-time travelers are NOT accepted unless they have more than 2 years of experience
- Managerial references required (2 references from Nurse Manager, Nurse Supervisor, or equivalent; Charge Nurse references NOT accepted)
Clinical Skills & Competencies
- Cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- Telemetry monitoring on unit
- IV therapy and phlebotomy: blood product administration, central and peripheral line care/management
- Respiratory care: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management (required)
- Isolation precautions (required)
- EKG exam upon arrival (required)
- Medication management: cardiac drips (no titration preferred)
- Work settings: Med-Surg/Telemetry required; Telemetry & ER Holding preferred
Orientation & Training
- 1 shift skills lab + 1 shift unit orientation
- Pass/fail Dysrhythmia EKG competency exam required within 72 hours of contract signing (multiple attempts allowed with remediation)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
- Core training modules (Parts I, II, III), OSHA, and harassment prevention training required annually via Relias
- Color blind testing (100% score required)
- Additional onboarding and continuing education modules required within 30 days of start and possibly throughout assignment
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Criminal background check within 30 days of start (7-year search including social security trace, NY state search, county/statewide searches)
- Education verification (must verify nursing degree for RNs)
- Drug screen (Aya standard 9-panel within 1 year)
- Various state-specific searches and disciplinary action checks
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Fit mask (N95) test within 1 year, updated annually
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers with vaccination if needed
- Hepatitis B positive titer or declination
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required by November 1
Facility Specific Requirements
- Photo for badge required within 72 hours of contract signing (color, plain white background, specific size and format)
- Multiple facility-specific documents and agreements must be signed and uploaded (e.g., Code of Conduct, Privacy & Confidentiality, Drug-Free Workplace Policy, Quality & Safety Practices, Staff Handbook, Infection Control Certificate)
- Must establish username and password for facility systems prior to orientation
- Travel policy review required
Additional Notes
- No holiday shifts scheduled for travelers
- PCU nurses accepted if comfortable with 1:5 ratio
- Float to multiple acute care units expected
- Must have two managerial references at time of application submission
- First-time travelers only accepted if they have more than 2 years of experience
