Job Description
- Position: NICU Registered Nurse
- Shifts: Rotating shifts
- Minimum Experience: 2 years in specialty (NICU)
- Prior Travel Experience: Required (must have completed at least one prior travel contract)
- Electronic Medical Record System: Epic experience required (no exceptions)
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Locals allowed at same rate
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 2 years of NICU nursing experience
- Prior travel nursing experience required
- Permanent RN license (temporary licenses not accepted)
- Virginia state RN license required
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (AHA only)
- NRP
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA only
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (as applicable)
- Color Blind Testing (required)
- Abuse Reporting Competency (covering physical/sexual abuse, domestic violence, neglect/exploitation)
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement (HIPAA)
- NURSYS Verification (for all RNs)
Background & Health Requirements
- Criminal background check within 60 days of start, including:
- All states lived/worked in past 7 years
- State of permanent residence
- VA Statewide Repository Search
- Sex Offender Registry
- Education verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Fingerprinting: Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check required for NICU and Pediatrics units
- Education: Degree from an accredited nursing program (NLN or CCNE)
- Physical Exam: Required within 1 year, attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Immunizations & Titers:
- Tdap vaccine or declination
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (Q-gold/T-spot within 30 days or two PPDs)
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers with booster if low titer
- Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
- Flu vaccine or approved exemption (seasonal requirement)
- Drug Testing: 9-panel drug screen within 60 days of start (instant screens not accepted)
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required
- Complete application/resume required
- Skills checklist updated annually
- Completion of facility-specific orientation modules and exams (Pharmacology, Point of Care Testing, Airborne Precaution Mask Fitting, BKAT for ICU/Step-Down units)
- Must carry government-issued photo ID during hours of service
- Proof of primary residence must match compact licensure
- Confidentiality and HIPAA agreements required prior to start
Notes
- Certifications expiring within 1 month of contract start will not be accepted
- No onsite renewals for certifications; renewals must be scheduled by the agency
- Fingerprint results can pend at start if proof of submission is on file
- Candidates must complete Virginia Central Registry submission within 48 hours of contract signing; may start with results pending if submission is confirmed
This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs with prior travel nursing experience who meet the specified licensure, certification, and background requirements.
