Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
- Role: RN in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) focusing on General Medicine/Observation
- Shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Floating: Required to float within skillset
Required Qualifications
Licensure
- Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
Certifications
- ACLS (AHA only)
- BLS (AHA only)
- NIH Stroke Certification
Clinical Skills & Experience
- Experience in Telemetry, PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia management, and use of Rapid Response and Code teams
- Experience administering cardiac drips (Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix) without titration
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
- Competency in chest tubes, tracheostomy care, PICC line management, and medication administration
- Respiratory skills including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, BiPAP, and non-invasive airway management
Experience Requirement
- Minimum years of specialty experience: Not explicitly stated; based on clinical skills required, prior experience in PCU or similar units is expected
- Prior travel experience: Not required (accepts first-time travelers)
Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: Goal 4:1, typically 5:1
- Telemetry monitoring is remote but monitors remain on the unit
- Tele-sitting support available via Patient Care Techs
Scheduling & Policies
- Call-off policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- All scheduling requests must be submitted with application
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background check: 7-year history required within 1 year of start
- Drug screen: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start
- Physical exam: Within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
- Fit test: Within 1 year, updated annually
- Immunizations: Proof of immunity or vaccination for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- TB test: Negative PPD, QGold, or TSpot within 1 year; annual updates required
- Education verification: Highest earned degree verification required
- References: 2 clinical references required
- Other required documents: I-9, Driver’s License/State ID, E-Verify, Residency Declaration (if applicable), Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement, and others as per facility policy
Additional Notes
- Locals accepted within radius rule
- EPIC charting experience required
- Magnet-designated hospital with Level I Trauma Center status and nationally ranked cardiac care
