Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (ER) - Travel/Contract

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Position: Registered Nurse in the Emergency Room (ER)
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center
  • Average Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: 1:6 (days and nights)
  • Floating: Will cross-train and float within the hospital system as needed (within scope)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Pending License: Accepted
  • Assigned to one campus with possible rotation to other campuses (travelers do not work trauma/rescue rooms, triage, or locked behavioral health units)
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes

Required Experience

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (ER)
  • Years of Experience: Preferred 2 years; minimum 1.5 years from a similar hospital accepted
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required; first-time travelers accepted

Required Certifications

  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – Required for ER
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Required Licenses

  • Current RN license valid in Connecticut (pending license accepted)

Additional Requirements & Compliance

  • Background Checks: 7-year criminal background check, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, Sex Offender Search, Education Verification, Foreign Equivalency (if applicable)
  • Physical Exam: Within 12 months of start
  • Fit Mask Test: Required within 12 months and updated annually (clean shaven required)
  • Immunizations & Health Documents:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (highly preferred for certain specialties)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccination or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B vaccination or declination
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
    • COVID vaccination preferred
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Employment History: 7 years work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Competency Exams: Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 12 months (85% passing score)
  • Color Blind Testing: Required for all candidates on/after 8/2/2024 (80% passing score)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: Required for ER RNs and other specified units
  • Facility-Specific Training & Attestations:
    • Stroke Education (except pediatric and NICU)
    • CLABSI Prevention Training
    • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
    • Language Services Training
    • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)

    • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
    • Pyxis ES MedStation Modules
    • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
    • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
    • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
    • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health)
    • New Employee Orientation Module
    • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
    • ED Handbook (ER RNs only)
    • eCart Training Module (except Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
    • Chaperone Policy Training
  • EPIC Testing: Required for RNs with EPIC experience who do not want to complete EPIC training at orientation

Scheduling & Attendance Policy

  • Weekend shifts are mandatory every other weekend
  • If a traveler calls out on a scheduled weekend shift, a makeup shift will be scheduled on another weekend within 6 weeks
  • Makeup shifts replace a scheduled weekday shift to avoid overtime unless approved otherwise
  • Failure to attend makeup shifts results in rescheduling and possible coaching/warning

This position is ideal for ER Registered Nurses with at least 1.5 to 2 years of experience who are comfortable floating within a hospital system and meeting comprehensive compliance and certification requirements. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
