Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU Float)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Position requires comfort working across all PCU (Progressive Care Unit) and MS (Medical-Surgical) units.
  • Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 AM - 7:15 PM).
  • Floating: May float 2-3 times per shift, with staffing needs re-evaluated every 4 hours.
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
  • Charting: EPIC experience required.
  • Accepts first-time travelers.
  • Locals accepted with radius rule applied.
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN license required.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Med Surg / Telemetry experience
  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Experience working with Adult patients
  • Experience working with Pediatric patients
  • Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
  • IV therapy
  • Phlebotomy
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line care
  • Trach management
  • Non-invasive airway support
  • Cardiac monitoring
  • Experience with Epic

Unit Details

  • PCU average nurse-to-patient ratio: 5:1
  • MS average nurse-to-patient ratio: 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)

Additional Requirements

  • Background check: 7-year history required within 1 year of start.
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam: Within 1 year of start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
  • Fit testing: Required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
  • Immunizations: Proof of immunity or vaccination for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and seasonal flu vaccination or declination form.
  • TB test: Negative PPD, QGold, or TSpot within 1 year; if positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire.
  • References: 2 clinical references required.
  • Employment application/resume required.
  • Skills checklist: Must be updated annually.

Scheduling & Policies

  • Call-off policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
  • All requests for time off must be submitted with application.
