Job Opportunity: Pediatric Ambulatory Care Registered Nurse
Location: Hempstead, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Job Description
Seeking an experienced Ambulatory Pediatric RN with 3+ years of pediatric nursing experience. The position involves working 3 twelve-hour shifts (7:00 AM to 7:30 PM) on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, with potential Saturday shifts required if full-time staff call out.
The nurse should be familiar with vaccine schedules and telephone triage. Bilingual skills, especially Spanish, are preferred due to a high volume of Spanish-speaking patients.

- Unit Type: Pediatric MedSurg, Ambulatory Care
- Common Diagnoses: Well child visits, asthma, viruses, gastroenteritis, developmental delay (including autism), obesity
- Special Procedures: Nasopharyngeal specimen collection
- Documentation System: EPIC (required)
- Provider Support Services: Interpretation, Phlebotomy, Respiratory, Social Services, Transportation
Schedule Requirements
- Block scheduling
- Weekend shifts required as needed (Saturdays possible)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
Preferred Certifications
- Asthma Educator Certification
- Breastfeeding Counselor
Required Skills & Competencies
- Pediatric dosage calculations
- Infection prevention and wound assessment/care
- Oral/nasal suctioning and oxygen delivery systems
- Telephone triage
- Experience with hyperbilirubinemia, seizure disorders, breastfeeding support (handling breast milk and feedings)
- IV therapy and phlebotomy skills preferred
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of pediatric nursing experience (highest requirement found)
- No prior travel experience required (first-time travelers not accepted)
License Requirements
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for New York State
- Must provide a hard copy of the NY RN license with green border and signature
- Online license verification required within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification required
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Criminal background check within 30 days of start (7-year search including social security trace, state and nationwide checks)
- Education verification confirming nursing degree
- Various state-specific exclusion and disciplinary action searches
- Drug screen (Aya standard 9-panel) within 1 year of start
- Physical exam and health clearance within 1 year of start
- Fit mask (N95) fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Required immunizations and titers:
- TDAP (within 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers with appropriate vaccination if negative
- Hepatitis B positive titer or declination
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
Competency Exams & Training
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (Relias)
- Color blind testing (100% score required)
- Unit-specific competency exam (Relias)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (pass/fail, time sensitive)
- Core training parts I, II, III (annual, Relias)
- OSHA mandatory training (annual, Relias)
- New York Harassment Prevention Training (annual)
- Harassment prevention and workplace conduct documents to be signed
- Facility-specific onboarding and education modules to be completed within 30 days of start
Additional Facility-Specific Requirements
- Photo for badge (color, plain background, specific size and format) within 72 hours of contract signing
- Various signed agreements including privacy, drug-free workplace, intellectual property, quality and safety practices
- References: 2 manager/supervisor references required (charge nurse references generally not accepted)
- Employment application and work history verification (7 years)
- Skills checklist updated annually
Other Information
- Unit does not accept first-time travelers
- Pre-approved time off: 1 request per contract
- Scrubs color: Gray
- High volume of Spanish-speaking patients
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 3 years of Ambulatory Care nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- At least one completed travel nursing assignment
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience working with Neonate, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, and Adult patient populations
- Experience with hyperbilirubinemia
- Experience in breastfeeding support and handling of breast milk and feedings (bottle, breast, gavage)
- Proficiency in pediatric dosage calculations
- Experience with oral/nasal suctioning and oxygen delivery systems
- Wound assessment and care experience
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
