Travel Registered Nurse (Step Down)
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Description
- 6 North is a 12-bed step-down unit utilizing critical care and neuroscience principles at the intermediate level.
- Patient populations include transfers from Neuro ICU, neuro trauma, subarachnoid/intraventricular/intracerebral hemorrhage, ENT cancer patients post tumor resection and flap reconstruction, post-operative spine patients, and various neurological conditions.
- Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 3 patients.
- Shift: Nights
- Schedule: Every other weekend and every other holiday off, with approval for 40 hours of time off.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of step-down nursing experience within the last year
- Experience in intermediate care settings
- ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Prior Travel Experience
- No explicit prior travel experience required.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Proof of I9 or attestation
- Government-issued photo ID carried during hours of service
- 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
- Official transcript or diploma verification (BSN preferred; ASN required if no BSN)
- Education verification through third-party vendor
- Drug testing within 2 months of start, updated annually (10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl)
- Physical exam attesting ability to meet physical demands, updated annually
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (no declinations/exemptions)
- 2-step TB test or Qgold within required timeframes; chest x-ray if positive
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required (no declinations/exemptions)
- Hepatitis B surface antibody positive titer required or antigen titer per protocol
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required (declination accepted but must be documented)
- Seasonal flu vaccination required (no exemptions)
- Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment during orientation (required for adult inpatient RN positions)
- Background checks and fingerprinting as required by Virginia state and facility policies
- Compliance with professional appearance guidelines and other facility-specific forms prior to start
Additional Notes
- Behavioral health-specific certifications (e.g., CPI) not required for this position.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), PALS, NRP, chemotherapy certification, and other specialty certifications are not required unless specified by unit.
- Candidate must be prepared for night shifts and the neurological patient population typical of a step-down neuro unit.
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro step-down unit with a focus on critical care principles and a diverse neurological patient population.
