Registered Nurse (RN) – Hematology/Oncology Unit
Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking experienced Registered Nurses for a Level 1 trauma center Hematology/Oncology unit. This role involves caring for hematology/oncology patients, including those receiving chemotherapy (chemo certification not required). The position offers a great learning opportunity with on-the-job training for chemo administration.
Unit Details
- Unit: 5 South Hematology/Oncology
- Beds: 32
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, sometimes up to 1:6; adjusted for higher acuity patients
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a)
- Scheduling: Block scheduling possible; travelers expected to fill schedule gaps; weekend work typically every other or 2 weekends per month; holiday rotation required
- Floating: Staff float between all med/surg units within skillset; higher acuity patients assigned to core staff
- Dress Code: Solid color, professional scrubs (any color)
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Minimum 1 year solid RN experience on first job
- At least 1 year experience in a Level 1 trauma center or very large hospital setting
- EPIC charting experience required
- BLS certification required (ACLS required for charge nurses)
- Comfortable managing lines, chest tubes, and caring for hem/onc patients
- Experience with chemo preferred but not required (training provided)
- Experience with titrating heparin drips; familiarity with cardiac drips a plus
- Must be comfortable working with tele monitors and reading strips; tele monitoring available on unit
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior travel experience with contract extensions preferred
- Experience in hematology/oncology or chemo administration preferred
Additional Requirements
- Flu vaccine required (medical exemption allowed with documentation)
- Fingerprint background check required (remote or in-person options)
- Must work at least 3 of the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day
- Open to working up to 48 hours per week; overtime billed after 48 hours
Patient Population & Care Environment
- Common diagnoses: hematology/oncology patients, including chemo patients
- High acuity patients with complex needs
- Respiratory therapy support available (CPAP, BiPAP at night; high flow on other units)
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation on first day including paperwork, system logins (Omnicell, Epic), and unit tour
- Two additional 12-hour shifts with preceptor for hands-on training
This position is ideal for RNs with solid acute care experience seeking to expand skills in hematology/oncology within a high-acuity trauma center environment.
