Registered Nurse - MedSurg Step-Down Unit (MSDU)

Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide nursing care in a 26-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), a critical care step-down unit for adult acute care patients requiring specialized monitoring and interventions beyond a general medical-surgical unit. Patients may come from Emergency, PACU, ICU, and med-surg floors. Care includes continuous pulse-oximetry and telemetry monitoring, airway management, acute BIPAP support, arterial and central lines, and titrated IV infusions.


Shift Details

  • Shift: 4x12 hour nights (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
  • Weekend: Every other weekend
  • Patient Ratio: 1:5 to 1:7

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York
  • Minimum 1 year of MedSurg/Step-Down (MSDU) or Progressive Care Unit (PCU) nursing experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NRP certification
  • TNCC certification
  • EFM certification
  • Experience with EPIC charting system
  • Tech Cert Verification - National
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
  • State License 1 Verification
  • NURSYS Verification (RN, LPN/LVN, AP)

Clinical Skills & Responsibilities

  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response: interpret and manage dysrhythmias, participate in Rapid Response/Code teams
  • IV therapy and phlebotomy: peripheral line care and management
  • Respiratory care: nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks, non-invasive airway management
  • Adherence to isolation precautions and infection control protocols

Certifications (as required by unit)

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM as applicable
  • State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • Other certifications per unit requirements

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • 7-year criminal background check (felony checks) within 3 months of start
  • Education verification and transcript if needed
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Immunizations or titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
  • Snellen eye exam within 1 year
  • COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required
  • References and employment verification as required

Additional Notes

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Local candidates must live within a 75-mile radius
  • Facility is a tertiary care hospital with 528 staffed beds
  • Scrub color: any combination of navy and white

This position requires adaptability, vigilance, and compassionate care within a multidisciplinary team environment.
