Job Opportunity: Step Down Nurse (Night Shift)

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Shift Details

  • Unit: Step Down Unit
  • Shift: Nights
  • Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (3 shifts of 12 hours)
  • Weekend Requirement: 2 shifts every other weekend (Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday for night shift)
  • Floating: Yes, may float to lower acuity floors within scope
  • Block scheduling: Not available
  • Local candidates within 75 miles radius are not accepted
  • Pending license accepted

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience (specialty experience requirement)
  • Must have recent bedside experience within the last 6 months
  • Experience required with:
    • Ventilator management
    • Titration of vasopressors
    • Insulin drips
    • Sedation medications
    • Trach vents
    • Arterial lines
    • External pacemakers
    • Chest tubes

Certifications & Licenses Required

  • Registered Nurse license valid in Missouri (pending license accepted)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all nurses)
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit specifics (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC) – verify with recruiter

Additional Requirements

  • Must pass a criminal background check (including statewide and nationwide searches)
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must remain valid throughout assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing required annually (N95 respirators)
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframe
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance documents and training prior to start (HIPAA, confidentiality, hand hygiene, dress code, etc.)
  • Professional references required (two, preferably supervisors within last year)
  • Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required and must be current

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Missouri
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Step Down (Step Down Unit) nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in PCU - Progressive Care Unit nursing
  • PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment
  • Recent bedside experience within the last 6 months
  • Experience with ventilator management
  • Experience with trach vents
  • Experience titrating vasopressors
  • Experience with insulin drips
  • Experience with sedation medications
  • Experience with arterial lines
  • Experience with external pacemakers
  • Experience with chest tubes
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Notes

  • First-time travel nurses are not accepted for this position
  • On-call is not required
  • No restrictions on return to work
  • Must comply with all facility policies and complete required orientation modules
