Job Opportunity: PCU Float Registered Nurse
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
Seeking a Registered Nurse comfortable working across Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units with floating responsibilities. The role requires flexibility as staffing needs are reassessed every 4 hours, potentially floating 2-3 times per shift.
Schedule
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Experience working in all PCU units and all Medical-Surgical (MS) units
- ACLS issued by American Heart Association
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- Experience with blood product administration
- Central line care experience
- Tracheostomy management experience
- Chest tubes experience (Emerson/PleurEvac)
- Cardiac monitoring experience
- Dysrhythmia interpretation and management experience
- Experience titrating cardiac drips
- Experience responding to emergencies via Rapid Response/Code teams
- Experience managing PCA protocols
- Experience managing heparin protocols
- Cardiovascular experience in pre/post cardiac catheterization settings
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Unit Details
- PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 5:1
- MS nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)
Additional Requirements
- Must be comfortable floating frequently during shifts
- Accepts first-time travel nurses
- Local candidates accepted within a specified radius
- Call-off policy allows 1 shift off per 2 weeks
Required Documentation & Compliance
- I-9 or attestation
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with address verification (within 100 miles radius)
- Background check covering 7 years of history, including education verification
- Drug screening (10-panel) within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Fit testing for masks within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Immunizations or positive titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Required competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable
- References: 2 clinical references required

- Must work one holiday during the contract
- Floating assignments may change every 4 hours based on staffing needs
- Orientation and compliance paperwork must be completed prior to start
