Registered Nurse - Neuro PCU
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Charting System: EPIC experience required
- Patient Ratio: 1:4–5 (travelers must be comfortable with up to 1:5)
- Patient Population: Adult patients with neurological conditions, including neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow
- Unit Features: Includes 5 dedicated beds for continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring
- Floating: Required to float to units within clinical skillset
- Accepts First-Time Travelers: Yes
- Locals Accepted: Yes, with radius rule applied
- Pending License Accepted: Yes, if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia RN license required
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
- Medication administration, cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
- Rapid Response and isolation precautions
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
- Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year, specifically Neuro PCU experience
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIHSS certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with EPIC charting system
Additional Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Immunizations or positive titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Background check covering 7 years of history
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required
- Two clinical references required
- Completion of skills checklist annually
- Compliance with facility-specific orientation and documentation requirements
Notes
- Must work one holiday during the contract
- Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Prior travel experience is not required
- Candidates with pending licenses from non-compact states may be considered
- Traveler must provide a valid driver’s license/state ID within 48 hours of signing, with address within 100 miles of the facility
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neurological progressive care unit with a focus on adult neuro patients, including stroke and epilepsy monitoring, in a Level I Trauma Center environment.
