Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse
Location: Greenville, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift Details
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Weekend coverage required
- Floating to other units may be required based on census; only to units where qualified
Unit & Patient Population
- Medical Surgical unit with diverse surgical cases including:
- ENT surgery (tracheostomies, laryngectomy)
- Plastics (I&D, Wound VACs)
- General Surgery (bowel obstructions, mastectomy, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, gunshot wounds, overdose, hernia repair)
- Surgical Oncology (pancreatitis)
- Colorectal surgery (colectomy, colostomy)
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (verify during onboarding):
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB)
- Other specialty certifications as applicable
Skills & Competencies
- Experience with medication systems (Omnicell)
- Competency with special equipment:
- Wound VAC
- Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
- PICC lines
- Drains
- Ostomy care
- Must complete medication and pharmacology competency exams annually
- Pass/Fail testing on medication and arrhythmia exams required prior to start
- Annual core training including universal precautions, cultural diversity, pain management, OSHA bloodborne pathogens, and patient safety goals
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 12 months, including multi-state and alias searches
- Drug screening within 12 months, updated annually
- Immunizations and health screenings required:
- TB test (True 2-step PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or Tspot) within 90 days of start
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years if working in high-risk areas
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity or vaccination
- Varicella immunity or vaccination
- Hepatitis B vaccination series or declination
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption (not required for remote workers)
- Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet job demands
- Respirator fit test completed onsite during orientation
- Photo for badge required prior to start
- Completion of online orientation modules and facility-specific training prior to start
Additional Notes
- Floating policy requires willingness to work on other units as needed
- Orientation includes approximately 12-16 hours of online modules plus 16 hours of onsite orientation
- Candidates must complete required testing and modules within specified timeframes before starting
- Documentation must be verifiable with clinic/facility information included
This position is ideal for experienced Medical Surgical RNs comfortable with a variety of surgical patient care, electronic health records, and flexible floating assignments.
