Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – PCU Medical/Pulmonary with Renal Overflow
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
Seeking a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) specializing in Medical/Pulmonary care with renal overflow patients. This role includes care for chronic ventilated patients (not ICU level).
Schedule
- 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Facility allows 1 call-off shift per 2 weeks
- Floating within skillset required
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring, including interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Administration of cardiac drips (e.g., Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low dose dopamine and dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix; no titration)
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
- Ventilator care for chronic ventilated patients (non-ICU level)
- Respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, and non-invasive airway management
- Participation in Rapid Response and Code teams
- Adherence to isolation precautions
Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
- Patient population: Adult and geriatric patients with pulmonary and other medicine-related conditions, including renal overflow
- Can accommodate up to two ventilated patients
- Use of remote telemetry and tele-sitting technology for patient monitoring
Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse
- Minimum years of experience: Not explicitly stated; assume standard RN competency with PCU/pulmonary experience preferred
- Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
Licensing Requirements
- Active RN license required
- Pending licenses accepted only if a single-state license from a non-compact state
- Otherwise, must hold an active Virginia State or Compact RN license
Additional Requirements
- EPIC charting experience required
- Must provide professional photo for badge
- Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG required
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, free from communicable diseases
- Fit testing within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Drug screening (10-panel) within 30 days of start
- Immunizations or positive titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella required
- Flu vaccination or mask/declination form during flu season
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required
- Two clinical references required
- Skills checklist updated annually
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience caring for chronic ventilated patients (chronic vented patient ventilator care)

- Locals within a certain radius accepted
- All scheduling and special requests must be submitted upfront
- Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
- Floating within skillset expected
