NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Roanoke, Virginia

Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with NICU experience for a Level III NICU. This is a travel/contract position with 13-week contract length.

Schedule

  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 AM - 7 PM), days
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Floating: Required to float within skillset

Experience & Skills

  • Specialty: NICU Registered Nurse
  • Required Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; must have experience with Level III NICU and neonates 34 weeks and older
  • Accepts first-time travelers (no prior travel experience required)
  • EPIC charting experience required

Clinical Skills Required

  • Neonatal care including extreme prematurity (22 weeks+), respiratory distress, and complex neonatal diagnoses
  • IV therapy: blood/blood products administration, arterial line management, central line care and blood draws, UAC/UVC management, starting and maintaining IVs
  • Medications: Anti-seizure meds, antibiotics/antivirals, IV vasopressors, neonatal dosage calculations, steroids, surfactants
  • Respiratory support: Bubble CPAP, HFNC, high frequency ventilation, chest tube management, nitric oxide, oscillators, suctioning, tracheostomy care, ventilator management (AC/PC/SIMV/CPAP/BIPAP/PEEP)
  • Gastrointestinal care: Breastfeeding support, colostomy/ileostomy care, feedings (bottle, breast, gavage), management of gastroschisis, omphalocele, NEC, oral/nasogastric/nasojejunal tubes, post abdominal surgery care
  • Neurological care: Assist with lumbar puncture, intracranial pressure monitoring, neonatal abstinence syndrome, seizure disorders, therapeutic hypothermia, VP shunts

Unit Details

  • Level III NICU with 60 beds divided into 5 pods
  • Patient ratio goals: ICU 1:2, Intermediate 1:4
  • Patient diagnoses include extreme prematurity, respiratory distress, congenital anomalies, neurological disorders, and more
  • Equipment includes high-frequency jet ventilators, oscillators, cooling blankets, infusion pumps, incubators, phototherapy lights, and positioning aids

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

License Requirements

  • Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if single-state from a non-compact state

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience working with neonate patients across gestational ages: under 24-28 weeks, 29-34 weeks, and over 34 weeks
  • Experience with Level III NICU
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NRP certification
  • Experience administering blood and blood products as IV therapy
  • Experience with arterial line management
  • Experience with central line blood draws and care of central/implanted lines
  • Experience with Umbilical Artery Catheter (UAC) and Umbilical Vein Catheter (UVC) management
  • Neonatal dosage calculations experience
  • Experience with surfactants
  • Experience with Bubble CPAP respiratory support
  • Experience with breastfeeding support and handling of breast milk
  • Experience with gastroschisis and omphalocele care
  • Experience with post abdominal surgery care
  • Experience with seizure disorders

Additional Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Drug screening (10-panel) within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or positive titers for measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, varicella
  • Background check covering 7 years of history required within 1 year of start
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required
  • Two clinical references required
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • Photo for badge required (professional, plain background)
  • Fit testing for masks required within 1 year and updated annually

  • Locals are not accepted due to radius restrictions
  • All requests for time off must be submitted with application
  • Candidate must work within the specified radius as verified by driver's license/state ID address
  • Floating within skillset expected
