Description

Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg Trauma Unit

Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Med Surg 3 North - Trauma unit, post-surgical, medsurg overflow
  • 32 beds
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5, can go up to 1:6; adjusted down for higher acuity patients
  • Patient types: Trauma (gunshot wounds, motor vehicle accidents, falls), post-surgical, general medsurg, burn overflow
  • Experience with high acuity patients and surgeries required
  • Comfortable managing lines and chest tubes

Certifications & Licenses

  • BLS required for all nurses
  • ACLS required for charge RNs only

Clinical Responsibilities

  • RNs may titrate heparin drips; amiodarone may be started before transfer to cardiac unit
  • Telemetry monitors on all units; central monitoring stations communicate with RNs
  • Charge nurses take light patient assignments and can take full load if needed
  • Respiratory therapy support available for CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow oxygen

Staffing & Scheduling

  • 12-hour shifts: 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
  • Schedule: 7 days on, 7 days off
  • Weekend requirement: every other or 2 weekends per month (may be higher based on department needs)
  • Holiday rotation with regular staff
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Floating required within skillset across all medsurg units; higher acuity patients assigned to core staff

Orientation & Dress Code

  • Orientation includes paperwork, system logins (Omnicell, Epic), unit tour, and scheduling discussion on day one
  • Two additional shifts with preceptor (12-hour night shifts)
  • Dress code: solid color scrubs, professional appearance; any color allowed

Additional Notes

  • Fingerprint background check required (in-person or remote processing)
  • Local candidates accepted
  • Nurse aides available on all units

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Mississippi
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
  • BLS certification
  • Experience with a high volume of surgeries and high acuity patients
  • Comfortable managing lines and chest tubes
