Registered Nurse – Stroke/Neuro PCU
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
- Charting System: EPIC experience required
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Floating: Required to float within skillset
- Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, staffing goal 1:4
- Unit: Telemetry Progressive Care Unit specializing in stroke and neurology patients
- IV Drips Managed: Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine
- Remote Telemetry: Monitors remain on unit; tele sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and dysrhythmia interpretation/management
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
- Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
- Neuro PCU experience
- Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, IMC, and stepdown units
License Requirements
- Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse – Neuro/Stroke PCU
- Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; implied neuro PCU experience required
- Prior Travel Experience: Preferred but not required; first-time travelers accepted
Additional Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, free from communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Immunizations or positive titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Two clinical references required
- Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required
- Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
- Compliance and confidentiality agreements required
- Must work within a 100-mile radius of the contracted facility (verified by driver’s license/state ID)
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a Telemetry Progressive Care Unit (PCU), including Neuro PCU experience within the last year
- Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIHSS certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
- Ability and willingness to float within skillset
Notes
- Locals accepted
- Call-off policy allows 1 shift call-off per 2 weeks
- Return to office (RTO) requests must be submitted with application
- Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
