Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - ICU/PCU Float

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Float between ICU and PCU units; must be comfortable working in all ICU and PCU areas.
  • Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM - 7:15 PM).
  • Floating assignments may change every 4 hours, potentially floating 2-3 times per shift.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
  • Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract.
  • Charting experience with EPIC required.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Local candidates accepted within a specified radius.
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, an active Virginia RN license (state or compact) is required.
  • Call-off policy allows 1 shift call-off per 2 weeks.
  • Requests for time off, block scheduling, or special scheduling must be submitted with application.

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

  • IV therapy: arterial line management, central/PICC line care, blood product administration, IV initiation and maintenance.
  • Respiratory support: BiPAP & CPAP management, ventilated patient care.
  • Medication administration: continuous IV sedation, emergency medications, titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips.
  • Wound care: surgical wounds with drains or wound vacs.
  • Cardiac monitoring: dysrhythmia interpretation and management.
  • Endocrine/metabolic: adherence to IV insulin protocols.
  • ICU experience required.
  • Experience at a large Level 1 or Level 2 facility required.
  • Preferred: 2+ years of nursing experience.

Unit Details

  • PCU average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
  • ICU average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIHSS certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience working at a large Level 1 or Level 2 facility
  • Experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Ability to float between ICU and PCU units as needed

Additional Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year prior to start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Fit test within 1 year, updated annually.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually.
  • Required immunizations or positive titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
  • Background check covering 7 years of history.
  • Education verification of highest earned degree.
  • Two clinical references required.
  • Completion of skills checklist annually.
  • Photo for badge required (professional quality, plain background).
  • Compliance with facility-specific orientation and documentation requirements.

Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted.
  • Floating assignments require flexibility and adaptability.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays as specified.
  • Call-off policy limits shift cancellations to maintain staffing stability.
