Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Neuro ICU

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Description

  • Neuro ICU is a 12-bed critical care unit specializing in intensive management of patients with life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical conditions.
  • Common cases include:
    • Central nervous system tumors
    • Complex spine surgery
    • Acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
    • Endovascular interventions
    • Traumatic brain injury
    • Spinal cord injury
    • Neuromuscular diseases
    • Status epilepticus
    • Central nervous system infections

Schedule & Hours

  • Shift: Days
  • Every other weekend and every other holiday required
  • Block scheduling cannot be accommodated or guaranteed
  • Up to 40 hours approved for time off

Required Experience & Skills

  • Must have experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
  • Specialty: Registered Nurse in Neuro ICU or critical care setting

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Current Virginia RN license (can submit with license pending)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of Neuro ICU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Background Checks & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
  • Education verification (BSN preferred; ASN required if no BSN)
  • Drug screening within 2 months of start, updated annually (10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl)
  • Fingerprinting may be required depending on unit assignment
  • Child Abuse and Neglect Registry check required if assigned to behavioral health or specific units

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (no exemptions allowed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol
  • Annual TB questionnaire if prior positive TB test
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required (no declinations)
  • Hepatitis B: Positive surface antibody titer required or appropriate antigen testing
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required (declination accepted but must be documented)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (no exemptions)

Additional Notes

  • Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions
  • Professional appearance guidelines must be reviewed and acknowledged
  • Fit testing required for patient-facing clinical roles, completed onsite if needed
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification required only for behavioral health nurses (not applicable here)
