Job Opportunity: Stepdown Cardiac Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
Hours per Week: 48


Unit & Patient Details

  • Unit: Advanced Care Unit (Stepdown Cardiac)
  • Typical patients include heart failure, chest pain rule out, NSTEMI, post-procedure patients, COPD exacerbation, drug/alcohol overdose and withdrawal.
  • Nurses must be competent in running IV drips such as heparin, nitroglycerin, amiodarone, Cardizem, insulin, etc.
  • Targeted patient ratios: 1:5 to 1:6
  • Daily average census: 31 patients
  • Uniform: Navy blue scrubs

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1.5 years of Cardiac Stepdown nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience in Stepdown and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) nursing
  • Documented experience with a patient ratio of approximately 1:5 in Stepdown or PCU in the work history
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Floating & Scheduling Requirements

  • Floating is expected; traveler will float first at employer’s discretion within specialty clusters
  • Floating locations may include main campus and nearby campuses within 10-15 miles
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays
  • Employer reserves the right to cancel up to 2 shifts per 13-week contract due to low census
  • Contract may be canceled with 2 weeks’ notice without penalty

Competency & Certification Requirements

  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year prior to start or must be completed within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts allowed)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam within 2 years of start
  • Unit-specific competency exam within 2 years of start
  • BLS and NIH Stroke certification current and valid (NIH Stroke required annually with a 5-day grace period)
  • ACLS preferred but not mandatory
  • Other certifications (if applicable): PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM depending on unit assignment (not required for this role)

Health & Background Requirements

  • Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness for duty and free of communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray; annual TB questionnaire if past positive TB
  • Required vaccinations or immunity documentation: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccination series, immune titer, or declination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen including marijuana panel within 12 months prior to documentation due date; lab work within 72 hours of contract signing
  • Respirator medical clearance and fit testing required prior to orientation
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal background check, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG required
  • Fingerprinting not required for this unit

Documentation & Onboarding

  • Current resume/application required
  • Two professional references within 2 years (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge nurse) or employment verification if references unavailable
  • Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to documentation due date
  • Required accounting documents: I-9, government-issued photo ID, E-Verify attestation, proof of name change if applicable
  • Facility-specific documents: Candidate agreement, annual health questionnaire
  • All certifications and licenses must be primary source verified and have correct legal name spelling

Additional Notes

  • Overtime is paid after 48 hours worked in the contract period
  • No employee incentives available for travelers
  • Request for time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer
  • Manager discretion applies to RTO approval and floating assignments

This position is ideal for experienced Stepdown/Progressive Care RNs with strong cardiac telemetry skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, variable environment.
