ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Charlottesville, Virginia
Position Overview
- Role: Registered Nurse (ICU)
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
- Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 19:00 - 7:00)
- Weekly Hours: 36 hours
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Float Pool assignment covering various ICU and intermediate care units including:
- Medical ICU
- Thoracic Cardiovascular ICU
- Coronary Care Unit
- Surgical Trauma ICU (Level 1)
- Neuro & Neurosurgery ICU
- Critical Care and Intermediate Care Special Pathogens Unit (COVID)
- Thoracic Cardiovascular Intermediate Unit
- Surgical Trauma Intermediate Unit
- Neuro & Neurosurgery Intermediate Unit
- ED Boarders (patients admitted but boarding in ED prior to room assignment)
- Scheduling: Every other weekend and every other holiday; time off restrictions apply around Memorial Day and 4th of July; block scheduling not guaranteed.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Clinical Competencies & Certifications
- Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, TNCC, NIH Stroke Certification) — verify based on specific ICU unit
- Medication and pharmacology competency exams required as applicable
Health and Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, attesting ability to meet physical demands of the position
- Immunizations and titers required with documentation including:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (Tdap after age 11, no exemptions)
- Negative TB test (2-step PPD or Qgold within 12 months; chest x-ray if positive)
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations accepted for measles
- Hepatitis B: Positive surface antibody titer required or negative surface antibody and antigen titers dated appropriately; declinations not accepted
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required; declination required if titer negative
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually during flu season (no exemptions)
- Drug screening: 10-panel drug screen including marijuana and fentanyl within 2 months of start, updated annually
- Fit testing for patient-facing roles completed onsite if required
- Latex allergy questionnaire if applicable
Background and Compliance Checks
- 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually; includes all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days
- Education verification through third-party vendor; official transcripts preferred over photocopies
- Fingerprinting required for Behavioral Health candidates and certain units; processed through Virginia State Police system
- Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check required for Behavioral Health and specific unit assignments
- Proof of 2 clinical references required
- Employment application, skills checklist, and performance evaluations required as applicable
Additional Facility Requirements
- Candidate must review and acknowledge professional appearance guidelines, traveler compliance, and release authorization forms prior to start
- TB screening and other health screening forms must be completed before starting assignment
- Orientation includes pass/fail testing for cardiac rhythm interpretation for adult inpatient RN roles
- Radiation badges for new candidates are supplied by the facility, not the agency
Scheduling and Time Off Notes
- Offers available for 36 or 48 hours per week
- Time off approval limited to 40 hours total; no approval for time off on Memorial Day or 4th of July
- Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed
This position is ideal for experienced ICU Registered Nurses comfortable with floating across multiple critical care units and working night shifts in a fast-paced hospital environment.
