Description

Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)

Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Schedule & Shift Details

  • Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM (12-hour shifts)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: Available to work every other holiday if needed
  • Must submit time off/block and special scheduling requests upon application
  • Call-off policy: Up to three shifts may be canceled by the client during the contract without penalty
  • Locals accepted only if outside a 75-mile radius (RN only)
  • Accepts first-time travelers

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Active New York RN license (NY is not a Compact state)
  • ACLS (AHA provider/instructor/RQI acceptable)
  • BLS (AHA provider/instructor/RQI acceptable)
  • NIH Stroke Scale certification (if available, include with submission)

Required Clinical Skills & Experience

  • Telemetry and stepdown-level care (PCU/DOU/IMC)
  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • Use of Rapid Response and Code teams
  • Oxygen administration via nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management
  • Management of cardiac drips (no titration) and blood product administration
  • Central and peripheral line care/management
  • IV therapy and phlebotomy
  • Isolation precautions

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
  • Patient types: Adults and geriatrics, including long-term pulmonary patients, ENT surgery, and surgical patients requiring stepdown care
  • Floating: Required to float within skillset
  • Uniform: Navy blue and white scrub colors

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU)
  • Minimum years of experience: Not explicitly stated; assume entry-level travel nurse acceptable (first-time travelers accepted)

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • 7-year criminal background check (felony checks) within 3 months of start
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 3 months of start, run monthly

  • Foreign equivalency evaluation if education obtained internationally
  • Transcript/diploma required if no education verification on file
  • Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam as required

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (specific acceptable mask types listed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire accepted in lieu of annual renewal
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, opiates, etc.)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination required during flu season
  • Snellen eye exam within 1 year (not annually)
  • COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required

Background & History Verification

  • Employment application required
  • Work history verification: at least two past employments verified (Aya direct candidates)
  • References: two references within 3 years required (Aya only)
  • Skills checklist required annually

State-Specific Requirements (New York)

  • NYS Nurse Aide Registry required within 3 months for LTC, ElderOne, Home Care, Hospice (not applicable here)
  • Fingerprinting required for Mental Health, Behavioral Health, Home Health Aide, and LTC units (not specified for this role)
  • Sex offender registry search required within 30 days of start
  • NY Medicaid exclusion list check within 3 months of start, run monthly

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
