Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical Surgical Unit

Location: Meridian, Idaho
Unit: Medical Surgical – 6th Floor
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Beds on Unit: 42
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, occasionally 1:6


Unit & Patient Population

  • Primarily a medical floor with some surgical overflow
  • Common patient types: respiratory, gastrointestinal, behavioral health (patients held from ER for discharge planning)
  • Respiratory therapy equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP (managed by RT), and high flow oxygen
  • Virtual telemetry techs support the unit; RNs read and interpret their own telemetry strips

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license
  • BLS Certification
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
  • Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips

Job Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Willingness to take students and potentially precept new travel nurses
  • No requirement for RNs to titrate drips, but common drips include heparin, PCAs, and morphine
  • Charge Nurse present on each shift (rarely takes patients)
  • Day shift includes an ADT nurse to assist with admissions, discharges, and tasking
  • Support from nurse aides/patient care technicians at a ratio of 1:8
  • Floating required between MedSurg 5, MedSurg 6, and similar units within the system (including nearby facilities about 8 miles away)
  • May float to ER for patient holds or 1:1 assignments

Orientation & Training

  • 3 days of general orientation including EPIC training and educator meetings
  • Completion of online modules prior to assignment start
  • 2 shifts on unit with a preceptor

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • 12-hour day shifts, scheduled by unit scheduler (no block scheduling)
  • Weekend requirement: 5 weekend shifts within a 6-week period
  • Holiday shifts required as needed
  • No call or standby requirements

Dress Code

  • Any clean, professional scrub color allowed

Additional Notes

  • Facility enforces a 50-mile radius rule for candidates’ permanent address
  • Telemetry equipment transitioning from SpaceLab to Philips by end of June
