Registered Nurse – PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Shift pattern includes holidays
- First-time travelers accepted
- Locals are not accepted for this position
- Perioperative/OR RNs and certain allied/ambulatory RN travelers are exempt from license restrictions effective 11/30/24
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Indiana
- Minimum of 1 year of recent Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience within the last year
- Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background checks within 30-90 days of start, including:
- 7-year residential/work history verification
- SSN trace, county/state/national criminal checks
- National sex offender registry
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification (may be pending at start if needed)
- Clear copies of official transcript or diploma showing degree and graduation date
- Physical exam completed within 12 months of start
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (includes amphetamines, marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP)
- Fit mask test within 12 months with approved respirators (3M N95 models or Honeywell N95)
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tuberculosis test (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted; history of disease not accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended (not required)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30–3/31)
- TB questionnaire updated annually
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment within 2 years, must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above
- Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and updated annually
Facility-Specific Requirements
- Completion of facility-specific compliance forms and confidentiality agreements prior to start
- Completion of orientation packets and tests (including self-study orientation and fast track slide packets) as applicable
- For Pediatric ICU at this facility, mandatory completion of specific training modules may be required (e.g., RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists)
- HIPAA acknowledgment required
- Proof of valid driver’s license or passport (clear copy)
- Personal or auto insurance proof required only for Hospice specialty (not applicable here)
Additional Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RN licenses to work at their facilities after 11/30/24 except for Periop/OR and certain allied/ambulatory RN travelers
- On-site fit testing is a last resort and not available at certain campuses; prior approval required for PAPR use
- Flu vaccine declinations are not accepted; exemptions must be physician-signed and approved by team lead
- Candidates must complete all required documentation and certifications timely to avoid delays or cancellations
This position is ideal for experienced PICU RNs who meet Indiana licensure requirements and are comfortable working night shifts on a travel contract basis.
