Neuro ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Hours per Week: 36 hours (can sign for 36 or 48 hours per week)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:2
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years total nursing experience, with 2 years specifically in a neuro setting
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted within 75-mile radius
  • Pending License: Accepted
  • Relias EKG Exam: Must pass Relias EKG exam; interpretation and management of dysrhythmias required
  • Stroke Education: Complete 10 hours of stroke education during orientation (NIHSS can satisfy 3 hours; ACLS renewal/new provider provides points)
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes, minimum 3 shifts per 13-week contract
  • RTO (Return to Office) Restrictions: No more than 7 days of RTO per 13-week contract

Patient Diagnoses & Unit Details

  • Ischemic strokes (post-thrombectomy, post-tPA)
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Seizure disorders
  • CNS infections
  • Hemorrhagic strokes
  • Subdural/epidural hematomas
  • ICP monitoring (EVDs/bolts)
  • Neurotrauma (gunshot wounds, motor vehicle crashes, spinal cord injuries)

Special Procedures/Equipment:

  • Vasoactive medication administration
  • Central line and arterial line management
  • Continuous ICP monitoring
  • CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy)
  • Hypothermia/hyperthermia management
  • Spinal precautions
  • Use of EVD and bolt devices

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only
  • NIH Stroke Certification (annual update required)
  • Relias Basic Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (must be completed within 1 year of start and updated annually)
  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – preferred but not required
  • Additional stroke education hours completed during orientation

Required Licenses & Verifications

  • Active Registered Nurse license for Missouri (pending licenses accepted)
  • Primary source verification of professional license (NURSYS verification required)
  • Government-issued ID (e.g., driver’s license or state ID)
  • Background checks including criminal background, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and state-specific searches as applicable
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) with annual renewal
  • Immunizations and health screenings:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (with yearly questionnaire)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season (Sept 30 – April 1)

Compliance & Facility Requirements

  • Must complete facility-specific orientation modules (~16 hours) via online platform before start
  • Required to sign and comply with facility policies including:
    • HIPAA Acknowledgement (annual)
    • Latex Allergy Questionnaire (annual)
    • Confidentiality Form (annual)
    • Hand Hygiene Policy
    • Fingernail Policy (must adhere or risk being sent home)
    • Dress Code Policy
  • Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months of start)
  • Vehicle registration form required for day shift workers
  • MO Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR) registration required for certain clinical roles
  • References: Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Employment application must be submitted and uploaded for facility review
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri (pending licenses accepted)
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU nursing experience, with Neuro ICU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
