Job Opportunity: Step Down Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Portland, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Unit: Neuro Stepdown (new unit opening mid-June)
  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 3 patients
  • Patient Diagnoses: Ischemic Stroke, Hemorrhagic Stroke, Status Epilepticus, Post-Craniotomy/Neurosurgery
  • Special Procedures: Post-Thrombolytic Care
  • Equipment Experience: Stable Hamilton C1 Ventilators, External Ventricular Devices, Lumbar Drains
  • Skills Required: Titration of vasoactive drips, care of ventilated patients
  • Floating: Floating within Acute Care division may be required
  • Weekend Requirement: Variable
  • Block Scheduling: Not guaranteed
  • Locals and Pending Licenses: Accepted (pending license must be submitted and received for 90-day exemption)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Oregon
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) or equivalent Stepdown units, with at least 1 year of recent PCU experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Facility Information

  • Facility Type: Short-Term Acute Care
  • Designations: Magnet recognized, Teaching hospital, Level I Trauma Center
  • Charting System: Epic
  • Parking: $16 daily pass (8 AM – 5 PM); public transportation encouraged
  • Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed, no prints

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background Check: Must be completed within 6 months prior to start, including education and work history verification, international searches if applicable, and national sex offender search
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen including methamphetamines within 3 months prior to start; lab-based and SAMHSA certified
  • Health Documents:
    • Fit mask test within 1 year prior to start (specific N95 masks required)
    • Immunizations and/or titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap (or signed declinations)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months prior to start
    • Annual flu vaccination or signed declination
    • Physical exam per Aya Healthcare standards (within 1 year)
  • References: Two manager or supervisor references from the last 24 months required (charge RN references not accepted unless direct supervisor)
  • Employment Application: Must include at least 7 years of work history with city and state for each position
  • Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology competency exam required with a passing score of 85% or higher
  • Facility-Specific Training: Completion of required online modules prior to start (e.g., privacy, harassment prevention, Vocera badge training for inpatient RNs)

Time Off and Scheduling Policies

  • Maximum RTO (Request Time Off) days:
    • 5 days approved for 13-week contracts
    • 7 days approved for 18-week contracts
  • Requests exceeding 5 days require extension of contract length to accommodate time off
  • All time off requests must be submitted and approved before contract start

Additional Notes

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Must be fully available for compliance needs up until start date
  • Facility requires signing of professional appearance policy, job description, coronavirus protocol attestation, and vaccine declination/waiver forms if applicable
  • Onsite respirator clearance and fit testing preferred to be completed by agency prior to start; onsite fit testing available if necessary

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro stepdown unit with a focus on stroke and neurosurgical patients in a highly regarded acute care teaching hospital environment.
