Shift Details

  • Night shift, 3 shifts per week
  • Shift hours: 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM (12-hour shifts)
  • Average patient ratio: 1:2 (day, night, weekends)

Job Description

  • Critical care experience required, including experience with PA catheters
  • Float requirement: ICU and Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • No call required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
  • Accepts candidates with 1.5 years of experience if from a Level 1 trauma center or large hospital
  • First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all RNs except Behavioral Health, Case Management, Home Health, OR including CVOR and RNFA, all Pediatric units, NICU, Labor and Delivery)
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (check unit description)

Required Competencies

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score 85%)
  • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates on/after 8/2/2024; must score 80% or higher)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required for Telemetry, MS/Tele, ER, all ICU units, Progressive Care, PACU, IR/Cath/EPEndo/GI; not required for NICU or Psych/Behavioral Health)

Licensure

  • Current Registered Nurse license for Connecticut
  • Primary source license verification required within 30 days of start
  • Must apply for CT license within 72 hours if not already licensed

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 1.5 years critical care experience if from a Level 1 trauma center or large hospital
  • Otherwise, experience in critical care nursing as required for CVICU

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 12 months of start, including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended, and education verification
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Foreign equivalency education evaluation and diploma required for internationally educated candidates
  • Verification of highest level of education required
  • Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
  • One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU (charge nurse references not accepted)
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech roles (not applicable here)

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation (various acceptable tests)
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (or declination within 1 year)
  • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric specialties, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum (declination acceptable)
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccine series preferred

Facility-Specific Training and Documentation (Required for RNs)

  • Stroke Education Module and Attestation (except Pediatric specialties and NICU)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
  • Language Services Training
  • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Modules
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding Module (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness Module
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health; must be updated annually)
  • New Employee Orientation Module (must be completed by end of first day)
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (required for ED/ER RNs)
  • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required for RNs and Allied as of 5/31/2024)

Additional Notes

  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module required for all RNs except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, and NICU
  • EPIC testing required for ER RNs with EPIC experience; optional but highly encouraged for others
  • Candidates must have photo ID matching legal name on first day

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 1.5 years of CVICU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Experience with PA catheters
