Registered Nurse - PCU (Medical-Renal)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Charting System: Epic experience required
  • Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
  • Floating: Required to float within skillset
  • Patient Population: Adults and geriatric patients, including chronic vent patients and hospitalist medicine patients with renal and other medical diagnoses
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5
  • Unit Type: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Stepdown / Intermediate Care Unit (IMC)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) within the last year
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years (valid within 1 year of start)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals
  • Education Verification: Proof of highest earned medical degree (transcript or diploma) required
  • Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations / Titers:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines each
    • Hepatitis B: Positive titer, vaccine series, or declination
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines
  • TB Testing: Negative PPD, QGold, or TSpot within 1 year; if past positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire
  • Fit Testing: Required within 1 year and updated annually (not required for students)
  • Photo for Badge: Professional photo with plain background required
  • Other:
    • Drivers License/State ID with address more than 100 miles from facility not accepted
    • E-Verify or attestation required
    • Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance checklists prior to start
    • Orientation Safety Manual review and acknowledgment (not required for inpatient RNs)
    • Carilion Pain Assessment signature required for inpatient RNs

Additional Notes

  • First-time travelers are accepted
  • Locals accepted within a specified radius
  • Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Must include all scheduling requests with submission

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation, caring for complex medical-renal patients in a progressive care setting.
