Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg

Location: Oakland, Maryland
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required (Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights)
Holiday Requirement: Rotates with regular staff
Call/Standby: None
Floating: Required; frequent floating to assist other units as needed

Unit Details

• Med/Surg unit with 20-32 beds (currently 20 due to staffing)
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: no more than 5 patients per nurse
• Unit accepts both RNs and LPNs
• House Supervisor assigns nurses and aides; no charge nurse role
• Nurse aides: 3 per shift
• Patient types: variety including chest pain, congestive heart failure, pneumonia, abdominal pain, pancreatitis, orthopedic cases, detox, post-op surgery, and pediatric patients
• Does not care for laboring mothers or patients requiring titration of cardiac or insulin drips
• ICU monitors used; RNs document readings but do not interpret strips themselves

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Maryland
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 2 years of Med Surg experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Equipment & Support

• Respiratory therapy available for CPAP, BiPAP (all hours), and high flow oxygen support
• Respiratory therapists assist and manage respiratory equipment

Orientation & Scheduling

• Unit-specific orientation includes 3-5 days of training covering policies, tours, introductions, and training with education, pharmacy, and lab departments
• Schedule created by manager; block scheduling may be accommodated based on traveler preferences
• Scrub color: any except camouflage or orange; scrubs not provided

Additional Notes

• No titration of drips required by RNs on this unit
• Floating to other units is a regular expectation to provide assistance as needed
