Operating Room Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Day shifts: 06:45 - 19:15)
- Weekend Requirement: Must work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- Rooms: 23 operating rooms
- On-Call: Yes, approximately 1 time per week (less frequent recently)
- Floating: Rarely, only within skill set if needed
- Block Scheduling: Not accommodated
- Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live at least 50 miles from facility
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 3 years of Operating Room nursing experience
- First-time travelers not accepted (prior travel experience required)
- General OR and Trauma experience required
- Level I trauma center experience required
- Cerner charting experience preferred
Case Experience Required:
- Bariatric: Laparoscopic assisted cases
- General Surgery: Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection, Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Partial/total Thyroidectomy, Whipple procedure
- Neurology: Cervical fusion, Craniotomy, Laminectomy/discectomy, Lumbar fusion
- Orthopedic: Arthroscopy, Carpal Tunnel release, Closed and Open reduction of fractures
- Plastic Surgery: Free Flap - Microvascular
- Transplant: Organ donation
- Urology: Cystoscopy, Nephrectomy, Prostatectomy
- Trauma: Amputations, Gunshot/stab wounds, Motor vehicle accident (multiple injuries)
Emergency Management Skills:
- Code response
- Fire safety
- Latex allergy management
- Malignant Hyperthermia
Equipment/Instrumentation Experience:
- Electrosurgical units
- Fiber optic light sources/cords
- Hana tables
Professional Knowledge and Skills:
- Administration of blood products
- Infection control
- Radiation safety
- Specimen handling and labeling
- Universal Protocol (Time out) procedure
- Urinary bladder catheterization
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license (must have in hand or be in application process)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required
- CNOR certification required
- ACLS and PALS may be required based on unit/specialty (AHA or RQI acceptable)

- Acute Care Hospital, Level I Trauma Center
- Magnet designated facility
- Total staffed beds: 562
- Scrub color provided
- Charting system: Cerner
- Parking permit required (no cost)
Time Off & Scheduling Policies
- All requested time off must be approved by manager
- Client may cancel up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay obligation
- On-call shifts count as called-off shifts if used in lieu of cancellation
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, updated annually
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming good physical and mental health, free of communicable disease
- Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
- Competency exam required for clinical candidates
- Professional references (2) required for travel and acute care candidates
- Badge photo required before start
- Various state-specific criminal and registry checks required within 30 days of start (Illinois)
Additional Notes
- Candidates must provide a valid US Driver’s License or State ID
- Candidates must not be local to the facility (minimum 50 miles away)
- No accommodation for block scheduling
- Facility can accommodate latex allergies
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Minimum 3 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Trauma experience
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- CNOR certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
This position is ideal for experienced Operating Room RNs with prior travel contract experience seeking a challenging role in a Level I trauma center with a focus on diverse surgical cases and emergency management.
