Operating Room Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract

Location: Knoxville, Tennessee
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Role: Operating Room (OR) Ortho Circulator
  • Schedule:
    • Monday: 10:30 AM – 11:00 PM
    • Tuesday: 10:30 AM – 11:00 PM
    • Friday: 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (36 hours/week)
  • Non-negotiable days and hours
  • Requires call and holiday coverage as applicable
  • Must live at least 50 miles from the facility
  • Level 1 trauma center with 24/7 coverage requirements

Unit & Patient Population

  • Ortho unit co-managed by an orthopedic surgeon practice within a Level 1 trauma center
  • Patient age group: Adults and Geriatrics
  • Department details:
    • 6 Operating Rooms (2 Ortho Trauma Rooms, 4 Ortho Block Rooms)
    • Procedures include Level 1 trauma ortho, elective total joint replacement, MAKO robotic total knee and hip procedures, fracture management, sports medicine, and basic spinal cases (no neuromonitoring or advanced experience required)
    • Primary vendors: Smith & Nephew & Stryker
    • Hana Table experience preferred

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience circulating in the Operating Room (OR), with OR circulate experience within the last year
  • Orthopedic trauma experience
  • Completion of at least 2 prior travel nursing assignments
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association

Documentation & Systems

  • Documentation system: Cerner
  • Medication system: Omnicell

Compliance & Screening Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
  • Background checks including:
    • Standard 7-year search (SS trace, county searches, nationwide, sex offender)
    • FACIS Level 3
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM (annual)
    • HHS/OIG (annual)
    • Tennessee Abuse Registry Search (within 30 days of start)
  • Certifications verification including:
    • ACLS, BLS, PALS (AHA only)
    • State RN license verification (primary source)
    • NURSYS verification required
  • Competency exams as applicable (minimum passing score 80% or Angoff score)
  • Facility-specific documents including badge photo and COVID exemption request
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) proof or titer for candidates born in 1957 or later
    • Hepatitis B (titer, declination, or vaccine series)
    • Varicella (titer, vaccine series, or history of chickenpox)
  • 9-panel drug screen within 1 year of start (instant drug screen acceptable)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required year-round

Additional Requirements

  • 2 professional references required for travel, allied, or per diem acute care roles (within 3 years of start)
  • Employment application including licensure, certifications, education, and employment history required
  • Annual skills checklist required

Important Notes

  • Candidates must be 100% pre-closed and able to start on 5/26 or 6/1
  • No return travelers to this specific orthopedic practice
  • Prior travel experience is mandatory (minimum 2 completed travel assignments)
  • Trauma Level 1 ortho experience with proficiency in all 3s and 4s in ortho required

This position is ideal for experienced orthopedic OR nurses with prior travel assignments seeking a challenging role in a Level 1 trauma center environment.
