Job Details

• Unit: Medical Surgical
• Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 18:30–7:00)
• Schedule: 36 hours per week (36/36 schedule)
• Rotation: Rotating weekends and holidays required
• No on-call duties
• Floating to other units required
• Patient ratio: 1:7

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Virginia
• Minimum of 1 year of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Orientation & Training

• General orientation begins on Sundays with online computer-based learning (CBLs)
• 16 hours of non-billable orientation required
• Hospital may cancel or call off one shift biweekly without penalty due to census changes
• Additional overtime shifts may be assigned flexibly based on census/resource needs

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical nursing care in the Medical Surgical specialty
• Participate actively in nursing student support and clinical education alongside clinical duties

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Background check within 30 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years; updated annually
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
• Education verification required
• Drug screening: Standard 9-panel drug test within 14 days prior to start (instant test acceptable as placeholder)
• Physical exam within 1 year of start (not required annually)
• Immunizations and titers required or documentation of immunity/declination for:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (MMR titer)
  • Varicella
  • Hepatitis B (series, titer, or declination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption during flu season (Sept 29 – Mar 31)
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility policy (2 PPDs within last 12 months or QGold/TSPOT within 3 months)
• Respirator fit testing completed onsite (must comply with CDC facial hair guidelines)
• Photo for badge within 48 hours of contract signing (must meet facility standards)
• Completion of facility-specific forms including dress code, smoking/tobacco use, contaminated sharps/body fluid exposure statement, and respirator medical evaluation questionnaire (time sensitive)

Additional Notes

• Candidates must commit to completing all compliance documents and orientation requirements by deadlines to start on a Sunday
• Hospital may adjust shifts based on census without financial penalty
• Participation in clinical education for nursing students is an expected part of the role
