ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Float position covering all ICU and PCU units; must be comfortable working across these areas.
- Night shift schedule: primarily 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM), with 4x12 shifts available by request.
- Floating may occur 2-3 times per shift, with staffing needs reassessed every 4 hours.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
- Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract.
- First-time travelers are accepted.
- Local candidates accepted within a specified radius rule.
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, an active Virginia RN license (state or compact) is required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia.
- Minimum 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year.
- Experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU).
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Certifications:
- ACLS issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Clinical skills including:
- Arterial line management
- Central/PICC line care
- BiPAP and CPAP management
- Continuous IV sedation
- Titration of cardiac drips
- Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
Unit Details
- PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 5:1
- ICU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 2:1
Documentation and Compliance Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility required within 48 hours of signing.
- Background check covering the last 7 years, including education verification and various federal/state checks, must be current within 1 year of start.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- Primary source verification of state license and NURSYS verification must be completed within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Fit test for respirator masks within 1 year, updated annually.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually.
- Required immunizations or positive titers for: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form required during flu season.
- Professional photo for badge issuance required.
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.
- Completion of new hire paperwork and orientation materials as required.
- Two clinical references required.
- Annual update of skills checklist and competency exams as applicable.
Additional Notes
- Facility allows one call-off shift per 2-week period.
- Orientation manual review and acknowledgment required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs as of 7/10/23).
- Candidates must be prepared to float frequently and adapt to changing unit assignments.
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, Level 1 trauma center environment with a focus on critical care nursing skills and flexibility across ICU and PCU units.
