Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Unit

Location: Uniontown, Pennsylvania
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit & Patient Population

• Unit: 2E MedSurg (includes areas 2N & 2S, treated as one large unit)
• Beds: 29 private beds
• Patient types:

  • Medical-surgical patients
  • Pneumonia, dialysis, palliative care, hospice, end-of-life care
  • Low volume inpatient chemotherapy (administered by director & manager)
  • COVID-19 patients housed on one hallway ("dirty" area); "clean" patients on a separate hallway—nurses may be assigned to both simultaneously and must be comfortable with this
• Common diagnoses on adjacent 1W MedSurg unit include post-surgical and orthopedic patients

Schedule & Shifts

• Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts (7:00 pm – 7:30 am)
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday) plus 2 Fridays per schedule (often grouped Fri-Sat-Sun)
• Hours per week: 36
• Self-scheduling and blocked schedules allowed if unit needs are met

Staffing & Ratios

• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7
• Charge Nurse/House Supervisor: Clinical Manager Mon-Sat acts as charge nurse and nurse manager (takes patients only if census >24)
• Nights have a resource nurse with a full patient assignment
• Nurse aides: 2 CNAs on day shifts; no CNAs on nights

Orientation & Floating

• Floor-specific orientation: 1 shift with a preceptor
• Floating: Only to other MedSurg units

Clinical & Equipment Details

• Telemetry: Patients may be on remote telemetry monitored by a monitor tech on a different floor; no telemetry monitors on the unit itself
• Drips: Heparin and possibly morphine sulfate for comfort measures; no cardiac drips
• Ventilation: Bipap, Cpap, High Flow managed by Respiratory Therapy
• Nurses do not read telemetry strips

Dress Code

• Scrubs: Navy blue; jackets (if worn) must also be navy blue

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Pennsylvania
• Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• BLS certification

Additional Notes

• Must be comfortable caring for both COVID-positive and non-COVID patients on the same unit
• Weekend and holiday work required as part of permanent staff rotation
• 50-mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg RNs comfortable with a diverse patient population including infectious disease precautions and complex care needs.
