Job Opportunity: Dialysis Registered Nurse
Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Work Schedule
- 40 hours per week guaranteed
- Monday to Friday, 5:30 AM – 10:30 PM (shifts of 8, 10, or a combination of 8- and 12-hour shifts)
- Every other weekend required, same hours and shift lengths as weekdays
- Occasional Sundays due to holidays, same hours and shift lengths
- Float required to cover all other dialysis locations
Job Responsibilities & Skills
- Charge Nurse experience required; may be assigned as Charge Nurse for a 24-chair unit
- Experience with outpatient chronic and acute dialysis patients required
- Coverage includes acute 8-station dialysis
- Must be proficient in:
- Chronic outpatient dialysis procedures
- Administration of blood and blood products
- Cannulation of AV grafts and AV fistulas
- Dialysate conductivity testing and monitoring multiple dialysis machine alarms (air foam detector, arterial pressure, blood leak, blood pump, conductivity, dialysate pressure, power failure, temperature, ultrafiltration, venous pressure)
- Blood glucose monitoring
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Infection control and emergency response (air emboli, cardiac arrest/CPR, chest pain, seizures)
- Managing complications such as clotted access, disequilibrium syndrome, fluid overload, hemolysis, hyperkalemia, hypotension, muscle cramps, pericarditis, pyrogenic reactions, and filter blood leaks
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
- Minimum 1 year of dialysis experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience in an outpatient dialysis setting
- Experience in Charge Nurse roles
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
Required Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) as required by unit
- Other certifications (PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification) as required by unit description
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as required
- Color blindness testing (one-time)
- Competency exams as required by specialty
- Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment
- State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
Health & Compliance Requirements
Candidates must complete the following within 5 days of contract signing:
- Physical exam (within 1 year, updated annually)
- Fit mask test (within 1 year, updated annually)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year) or TB questionnaire annually
- Immunizations or positive titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (Surface AB and AG titers required for dialysis)
- Varicella
- Drug screening within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
- Snellen eye exam (within 1 year)
- COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required
Background & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- 7-year criminal background check within 3 months of start (including felony, SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, education verification)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 3 months of start, updated monthly
- Foreign education equivalency evaluation if applicable
- Transcript/diploma or education verification as required
- Employment application and work history verification (minimum 2 past employments)
- References (2 within 3 years) required for direct hire candidates
- Photo for badge (passport-style with solid background)
- Facility-specific attestations and new hire forms as required
- State-specific checks including sex offender registry and Medicaid exclusion list
Additional Notes
- Float coverage required across multiple dialysis locations
- Candidates must be flexible with shift lengths and weekend coverage
- Prior travel experience is not required
- Locals must live more than 75 miles away to qualify for standard contract terms
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized dialysis setting with a focus on both chronic outpatient and acute care dialysis patients, requiring strong clinical skills and leadership experience as a Charge Nurse.
