Travel Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Neuro

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Medical Surgical – Neuro
  • Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Patient Ratios: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Charge Nurse experience required
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Floating: Within service line only
  • Local candidates not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Pending license accepted
  • Maximum Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed hours: Minimum 3 shifts per 13 weeks (cancelled shifts must be full length)

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Missouri (pending license accepted)
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required
  • Experience in Charge Nurse roles
  • ACLS certification (American Heart Association)
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Certifications & Licenses

  • NIH Stroke Certification (annual update required)
  • IV Start Certification required
  • EPIC electronic health record proficiency required
  • Additional certifications may be required based on unit (e.g., TNCC, PALS, NRP, CPI, MAB) – check unit-specific requirements

Clinical Skills & Procedures

  • IV starts, Foley catheter care, lumbar punctures, lumbar drains, G-tubes, tracheostomies
  • Use of bladder ultrasound
  • Management of neurological patients and related special procedures

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required (e.g., driver’s license or state ID)
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive drug panel
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95 respirators) with annual renewal
  • Immunizations and health screenings:
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Tdap vaccine or declination (required every 10 years)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season (Sept 30 – Apr 1)
  • HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start
  • Facility-specific orientation modules (approximately 16 hours) required before starting

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Unit-specific competency exams required annually, including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency
  • Skills checklist within 1 year of start, including oncology skills if applicable
  • No on-call requirement
  • Parking available with monthly fees; free parking for straight night shifts in employee lots

Notes

  • Candidates must pass the Relias Basic Dysrhythmia exam within 1 week of assignment start
  • Floating is limited to within the service line
  • Block scheduling is not accommodated
  • Candidates must adhere to facility policies or risk being sent home from shifts

This position offers an opportunity to work in a large, short-term acute care teaching hospital with a focus on neurological and medical surgical nursing care.
