Description

Critical Care Float Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Newport News, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week: Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
Hours: 12 hours per shift, 36 hours per week


Job Overview

  • Float pool position covering multiple Critical Care Units: Surgical ICU (SICU), Medical ICU (MICU), Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), and Oncology ICU (OICU).
  • Patient populations include trauma, surgical complications, neuro patients, open-heart surgery, critically ill medical comorbidities, cardiac procedure monitoring, oncology patients requiring chemo induction, DKA, and alcohol withdrawal.
  • Requires flexibility in scheduling; every other weekend required including Saturday and Sunday. Holiday shifts may be assigned during the contract.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia.
  • Minimum 2 years of Critical Care Float nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Float experience across multiple critical care units.
  • Proficiency with NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).

Competencies & Training

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam and other competency exams as applicable, to be completed within one year of start date.
  • Pass/fail testing (e.g., EKG, medication) administered during orientation.
  • Annual CEUs for stroke education required (6 hours for ICU units).
  • Acknowledgement of pass/fail testing required for all clinical positions.

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Night shift only: 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, 3 shifts per week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Flexibility to work holidays if they fall within the assignment period.

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
  • Must complete all required documentation and clearances prior to start date.
  • Facility-specific forms and policies must be reviewed and signed before starting.
