ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Float position covering all ICU and PCU units; must be comfortable working across these areas.
  • Night shift schedule: primarily 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM), with 4x12 shifts available by request.
  • Floating may occur 2-3 times per shift, with staffing needs reassessed every 4 hours.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block.
  • Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Local candidates accepted within a specified radius rule.
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, an active Virginia RN license (state or compact) is required.

Required Qualifications

Licensure & Certifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS).

Education

  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year.
  • Experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU).
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Unit Details

  • PCU nurse-to-patient ratio approximately 5:1.
  • ICU nurse-to-patient ratio approximately 2:1.

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility required within 48 hours of signing.
  • E-Verify or attestation required.
  • Background check covering the last 7 years of residence/employment, completed within 1 year of start date.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals.
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required; transcript or diploma may be accepted as a placeholder if verification is pending.
  • NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
  • Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students).
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year, updated annually; if previously positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire required.
  • Immunization or positive titer documentation required for: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form required during flu season.
  • Photo for badge: professional picture with plain background, no selfies or filters.
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing.
  • Completion of new hire paperwork prior to start.
  • Review of contract staff orientation manual (not required for inpatient RNs).
  • Signature on pain assessment expectation form required for inpatient RNs.
  • Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted).
  • Completed employment application/resume required.
  • Annual update of skills checklist required.

Additional Notes

  • Facility may call off one shift every two weeks.
  • Requests for time off must be submitted with application.
  • Radiation badges are not provided for new candidates; existing badge holders will continue to receive badges until assignment end.
  • Virginia State Police Search completed onsite on first day of orientation for certain candidates; no pre-start action required.

This position offers a challenging ICU float role with a reputable Level 1 trauma center, requiring strong critical care skills and flexibility to work across multiple units on night shifts.
