NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - New Brunswick, NJ
Job Details
- Position: NICU Registered Nurse
- Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 19:00 - 7:30)
- Hours per Week: 36 hours
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Information
- Unit Type: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Special Care Nursery (SCN)
- Patient Ratios:
- NICU: 1 nurse to 2 patients
- SCN: 1 nurse to 3-4 patients
- Patient Mix: 21-bed NICU and 16-bed SCN
- Level of Care: Facility is Level IV, but travelers with Level III NICU experience are accepted
- Scope: Will not attend high-risk deliveries
- Floating: May float to Newborn Nursery (NBN), SCN, Pediatrics, and Pediatric ICU (PICU) as appropriate
Required Experience & Skills
- Experience: Minimum 2+ years of current Level III NICU experience required
- First-Time Travelers: Accepted
- Required Skills: Experience with jet ventilators, oscillators, ECMO, umbilical arterial/venous lines (UAB), Criticool body cooling, and transport recipients preferred
- Charting System: EPIC
Scheduling & Work Policies
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) plus every other holiday as applicable
- Block Scheduling: Not approved
- Locals: Accepted
Required Certifications
- Mandatory:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Preferred:
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
Licensure
- Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for New Jersey
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Background Check: Criminal background check required within 30 days of start; must include all aliases and locations worked/lived in past 7 years
- Drug Screen: Negative 10-panel urine drug screen within 30 days of start
- TB Screening: Negative TB test (blood or skin) or chest X-ray as per facility requirements
- Physical Exam: Required within 12 months of start, must clear candidate to perform essential job functions and be free of communicable disease
- Respirator Medical Clearance: Required prior to start, including on-site fit testing; must be updated annually
- Flu Vaccination: Annual influenza vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required
- Other Immunizations: Proof of immunity or vaccination for Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap required
- Color Blind Testing: Required if job tasks involve color discrimination; must be within one year of start
- References: Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
- Employment History: 7 years of work history required, with verification of at least 1 year prior to start date (New Jersey state mandate)
Competency & Testing Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Required for all RNs; must be completed within 72 hours of signing contract
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: Required for applicable units; must be completed within 72 hours of signing
- IV Therapy/Infusion Exam: Required for all RNs except those in OR specialties; must be completed within 72 hours of signing
- Pass/Fail Testing: Pharmacology and Basic EKG exams required for clinical staff in relevant units; candidates have 3 attempts to pass
Additional Training & Documentation
- Annual Education Sign-Off: Must be completed prior to start and updated annually
- Skills Checklist: Must be completed and updated annually
- Floating Policy Acknowledgement: Required for every new assignment or site transfer
- Vendor Medical Clearance Form: Required if history of positive TB
- Iron Temple Training: Required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (not NICU specific but may be relevant if floated)
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement: Proof of OSHA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission annual training required
Notes
- Candidates must provide a government-issued photo ID and driver’s license within 48 hours of signing contract
- Facility uses EPIC for charting
- Candidates with name changes must provide proof of name change and include all names in background checks
- Candidates must bring physical exam and respirator clearance documents on first day for orientation and fit testing
- Candidates with facial hair must be clean-shaven for fit testing unless approved accommodation is provided
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey
- Minimum 2 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience, with NICU experience within the last year
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- IV Certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
