Job Opportunity: Stepdown Cardiac Registered Nurse
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Night shift: 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Patient ratio target: 1:5 to 1:6
- Unit cares for patients with heart failure, chest pain rule out, NSTEMI, post-procedure, COPD exacerbation, drug/alcohol overdose and withdrawal
- Competency required in managing IV drips such as heparin, nitroglycerin, amiodarone, Cardizem, insulin, etc.
- Navy blue scrubs required
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of recent Cardiac Stepdown experience, including Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
- Demonstrated experience working at a 1:5 patient ratio (must be documented in work history)
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips
- Current ACLS certification
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
Competency & Certification Requirements
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: Must be passed within 1 year prior to start or completed within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts max)
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 2 years
- NIH Stroke Certification updated annually (required for this unit)
- BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA only, expiring certifications must be renewed)
- Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness to work and free of communicable diseases
- Respiratory protection medical questionnaire and clearance required prior to orientation
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen including marijuana within 12 months prior to documentation due date; lab work must be completed within 72 hours of contract signing
Work Requirements & Conditions
- Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays
- Floating required at employer’s discretion; may float to nearby campuses within 15 miles
- Employer reserves the right to cancel up to 2 shifts during the 13-week contract due to low census
- Employer may cancel contract with 2 weeks’ notice without penalty
- Not eligible for employer employee incentives
Documentation & Onboarding Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- E-Verify compliance and I-9 documentation prior to start
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, national sex offender registry, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG required
- Education verification (primary source) for all non-RN candidates (not applicable here)
- Current resume/application required
- Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to documentation due date
- Two professional references within 2 years (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge RN) or 1-year work history verification if references unavailable
- Annual health questionnaire and candidate agreement fully completed prior to documentation due date
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray and annual TB questionnaire if past positive TB
- Proof of immunity or vaccination for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and hepatitis B (vaccination series, immune titer, or declination)
- Physical exam signed by MD, DO, NP, PA, or RN within 2 years
- Drug testing and respiratory safety clearance required
Additional Notes
- ICU experience does not fulfill the Stepdown/PCU experience requirement
- Target patient ratios and experience must be clearly documented in the application to avoid delays
- Floating assignments will be medically appropriate and may include multiple campuses within a short distance
- RTO (Return to Offer) requests must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer
This position is ideal for experienced Stepdown/PCU RNs with strong cardiac telemetry skills, EPIC proficiency, and flexibility to float and work night shifts in a fast-paced cardiac care environment.
