Description

Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)

Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 4 shifts of 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in MedSurg nursing
Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first-time travelers accepted)
Local Radius Requirement: Must live within 75 miles of the facility


Unit & Patient Population

  • 26-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), a critical care step-down unit
  • Provides care for adult acute care patients requiring more specialized care than general medical-surgical units
  • Patients have continuous pulse-oximetry and telemetry monitoring
  • Care includes airway management, acute BIPAP support, arterial lines, central lines, and titrated medicated IV infusions
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 5-7 patients
  • Multi-disciplinary team approach with a focus on evidence-based, compassionate care

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Proficient in interpretation of dysrhythmias

Health & Compliance Requirements

Candidates must complete the following health-related requirements and lab work within 5 days of contract signing:

  • Physical exam (within 1 year, updated annually)
  • Fit mask test (annual)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year) or TB questionnaire annually
  • Immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive, completed series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination (required during flu season)
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start
  • Snellen eye exam (within 1 year)
  • COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required

Background & Verification

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • 7-year criminal background check including felony, SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, and education verification
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 3 months of start and monthly thereafter
  • Foreign education equivalency evaluation if applicable
  • Employment verification of at least 2 past employments
  • References (2 within 3 years) required for direct hire candidates
  • State-specific checks including sex offender registry and Medicaid exclusion list

Additional Notes

  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required
  • Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required within 30 days for RN license
  • Medication and pharmacology competency exams as required
  • Color blindness testing required once
  • Facility-specific documents such as photo for badge and parking pass form required
