Job Opportunity: Critical Care Float Nurse

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Float across multiple ICUs including Trauma, Oncology, Cardiac/Heart and Vascular, Neurology, Medicine, and COVID units.
  • May also float to inpatient floors as a staff nurse when ICU needs are low, with a maximum floor ratio of 1:3.
  • Possible assignment as a patient sitter if needed.
  • ICU nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1 for all shifts.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend with a minimum of 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule, plus holiday rotation.
  • No specific CVICU experience required, but a minimum of 1 year CV ICU experience is preferred.
  • Past experience with EPIC charting system preferred.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri.
  • Minimum of 2 years ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including ICU experience within the last year.
  • Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment.
  • Float nursing experience.
  • Certifications required:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Education: Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Shift Details

  • Night shift: 18:45 to 7:15 (3 shifts per week)
  • 12 hours per shift
  • 36 hours per week

Facility & Work Environment

  • Short Term Acute Care facility.
  • Charting system: EPIC.
  • Free parking available.
  • Scrub color: Navy Blue.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required.
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches.
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start.
  • Professional license primary source verification required (NURSYS for Missouri).
  • Drug testing within 1 year, including a comprehensive panel, must be current throughout assignment.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start required.
  • Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually.
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year, with yearly TB questionnaire
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sept-April)
  • Required facility-specific documents include:
    • HIPAA Acknowledgement
    • Latex Allergy Questionnaire
    • Confidentiality Form
    • Regulatory Compliance Education (annual quiz with 80% passing score)
    • Hand Hygiene Policy acknowledgment
    • Fingernail and Dress Code Policy acknowledgment
    • Orientation modules (approx. 16 hours) completed via online platform before start
  • Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months).

References & History

  • Two professional references required; supervisors within the last year preferred.
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start. Oncology skills checklist required if assigned to Oncology unit.

Additional Notes

  • Candidate must be able to float to multiple units and adapt to varying patient care needs.
  • Strong clinical judgment and flexibility are essential.
  • Prior travel nursing experience is mandatory; first-time travelers will not be accepted.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic ICU float role with exposure to multiple specialty units in a well-established acute care setting.
