Registered Nurse - ICU (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Day (4x12 hours), 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Float pool position covering various ICU and intermediate care units including:
    • Medical ICU
    • Thoracic Cardiovascular ICU
    • Coronary Care Unit
    • Surgical Trauma ICU (Level 1)
    • Neuro & Neurosurgery ICU and Intermediate Unit
    • Critical Care and Intermediate Care Special Pathogens Unit (COVID)
    • Thoracic Cardiovascular Intermediate Unit
    • Surgical Trauma Intermediate Unit
    • ED Boarders (patients admitted but boarding in ED prior to room assignment)
  • Must adhere to float policy
  • Scheduling:
    • 36 or 48 hours offered per week
    • Every other weekend and every other holiday required
    • No time off approved for 4th of July or between 07/12-07/19
    • Time off can be approved up to 40 hours, but no return-to-work (RTO) approved during first 2 weeks
    • Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed
  • Must have experience with Epic electronic health record system

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required and must be carried during hours of service
  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days
  • Education verification required:
    • BSN preferred; ASN required if no BSN
    • Official transcript acceptable; photocopy of diploma not accepted
  • Fingerprinting (Virginia State Police) may be required depending on unit; must be completed prior to start if applicable
  • Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check required only for Behavioral Health and Unit 5 East assignments
  • Proof of 2 clinical references required
  • Employment application/resume and skills checklist must be completed and updated annually
  • Performance and internal evaluations required if worked over 1 year with the agency

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months attesting ability to meet physical demands of position
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (Tdap after age 11, no declinations allowed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray:
    • 2-step PPD required (1st within 1 year, 2nd within 90 days of start) or QGold within 12 months
    • Chest X-ray required if PPD or QGold positive
  • Annual TB questionnaire if past positive
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella:
    • 2 vaccines or positive titer required
    • Declinations not accepted for Measles; declinations accepted for Mumps and Rubella but must be documented
  • Hepatitis B:
    • Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required
    • If low/negative, Hep B Antigen titer required within 6 months of start and dated after antibody titer
    • Declinations or exemptions not accepted
  • Varicella:
    • 2 vaccines or titer required
    • Declination accepted but must be documented
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually during flu season (10/31 - 3/31) with no exemptions or declinations accepted
  • Drug screening:
    • 10-panel drug screen including marijuana (cannabinoids) and fentanyl required within 2 months of start and updated annually
    • Instant drug tests not accepted

Certifications and Competencies

  • Must have current BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA or ARC accepted)
  • Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
  • Additional certifications (PALS, NRP, TNCC, etc.) may be required depending on unit assignment but not specified for this role

Additional Facility Requirements

  • Candidate must review and initial professional appearance guidelines, traveler compliance, and fit testing acknowledgment (fit testing done onsite if required)
  • Release authorization and screening forms must be completed prior to start
  • Latex allergy questionnaire required if applicable (must be completed and submitted separately)
