Description

ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Shift: Nights (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Intensive Care Unit (ICU), PM shift
  • Average patient ratio: 1:3 (days, nights, weekends)
  • No on-call required
  • Floating required to PCU, other ICUs, and SRC campus as needed
  • Every other week (EOW) coverage expected

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of recent ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Facility & Work Environment

  • Short Term Acute Care facility
  • Level I Trauma Center
  • Approximately 1,567 staffed beds
  • Electronic Health Record system: Epic
  • Parking cost: $125/month

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Valid government-issued photo ID matching legal name on first day
  • 7-year criminal background check within 12 months prior to start, including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended, and education verification
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Foreign equivalency education evaluation required for internationally educated candidates
  • Verification of highest level of education (official transcripts if third-party verification unavailable)
  • Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps over 90 days
  • Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
  • One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU only; otherwise, standard references apply
  • Skills checklist completed within 12 months of start
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure if applicable to certain tech roles (not RN-specific)

Certifications & Competencies

  • Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (minimum 85% score) within 12 months of start
  • Color Blind Testing (minimum 80% score) required for all candidates starting on or after 8/2/2024
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for ICU and several other units (not required for NICU, Psych/Behavioral Health, Pediatric, or Ambulatory units)
  • NIH Stroke Certification required for all RNs except Behavioral Health, Case Management, Home Health, OR, Pediatric units, NICU, and Labor & Delivery
  • Additional unit-specific certifications may apply (check unit description)

  • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
  • Stroke Education (except Pediatric specialties and NICU)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Training
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (except certain hospitals)
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health) – annual update required
  • New Employee Orientation Module (copy required by end of first day)
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RNs except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
  • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training (new module required if gap >6 months or module updated)
  • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026 and forward)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually (3M N95 preferred; exemptions possible with medical/religious documentation)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation (T-Spot or QGold within 6 months, or 2 PPDs within 12 months)
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer, vaccine series, or declination within 1 year)
    • Varicella (positive titer, 2 vaccines, or physician documented history)
  • Tdap vaccination within 10 years highly preferred for Pediatric specialties, Labor & Delivery, and Postpartum (declination accepted)
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start (rapid accepted)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 – 3/31); declinations not allowed
  • COVID vaccination series preferred but not required

Work Hours

  • 36 hours per week (3 shifts of 12 hours each)

This position offers a challenging ICU night shift role with floating responsibilities and requires a strong commitment to compliance, certifications, and ongoing training. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
