Registered Nurse – IMC (Night Shift)

Location: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 12 weeks


Job Overview

  • Unit: Intermediate Care (IMC) / Medical-Surgical (MS) stepdown specializing in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients.
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
  • Patient population includes:
    • Cardiothoracic surgery patients (pre-op/post-op day 1 CABG, femoral bypass, thoracotomy, VATS, CEA)
    • Cath lab patients (STEMI/NSTEMI, coronary artery disease)
    • CHF exacerbations
    • Bradycardia (symptomatic and asymptomatic)
    • Temporary or external pacemaker patients
    • Dysrhythmias (Afib/Aflutter, SVT, Vtach with pulse, etc.)
    • Hemothorax and pneumothorax patients
  • Charting system: Epic
  • Floating: Required within scope to meet facility needs, including sister facilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Oklahoma.
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least 1 year within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • ACLS certification.
  • EKG Course or Telemetry Test.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Orientation & Facility Requirements

  • Must attend Patient Care Orientation Class (Skills).
  • EPIC training required if no EPIC experience within the last 6 months.
  • Fit testing (N95 mask) completed onsite prior to or on the first day.
  • Completion of facility-specific acknowledgments and policy forms prior to start.
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, education verification, and various federal/state sanction lists required within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and no physical limitations.
  • Drug screening (10-panel including marijuana) within 30 days prior to start.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months.
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (Tdap mandatory for certain units).
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer).
    • Hepatitis B (vaccination series, positive titer, or declination).
    • Varicella (2 vaccines, titer, or history of chickenpox).
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption required annually.
    • COVID vaccination strongly preferred; declinations accepted with agency form.
  • References: Two former direct supervisor references required (one within 1 year, one within 3 years).

Competency & Testing Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (annual, 100% passing score).
  • Color Blind Testing within 60 days prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exams (annual, minimum 80% passing score).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (annual, minimum 90% passing score).
  • Core competency exams covering safety, infection control, ethics, and patient rights (annual).
  • Conscious sedation competency exam if applicable (annual, 80% passing score).

Additional Notes

  • Floating to sister facilities is required.
  • Block scheduling is not accommodated.
  • The unit admits both MS and IMC level patients, with nurse-to-patient ratios adjusted based on patient acuity.
  • The facility has 16 staffed beds with an average daily census of 16 patients.
