Registered Nurse – MICU (Night Shift, Travel/Contract)

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Nights (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • Average patient ratio: 1:3 (days, nights, weekends)
  • No on-call required
  • Floating required to PCU, other ICUs, and SRC campus as needed
  • Every other week (EOW) coverage
  • Charting system: Epic
  • Facility type: Short Term Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center
  • Total staffed beds: 1,567

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Competencies & Exams

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (required within 12 months of start, minimum 85% passing score)
  • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024, minimum 80% passing score)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required for ICU and related units starting 5/13/2026)

Mandatory Trainings & Modules (must be completed and attested)

  • Language Services Training
  • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
  • Stroke Education (except Pediatric specialties and NICU)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Training
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (except certain hospitals)
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health) – must be updated annually
  • New Employee Orientation Module (must be completed by start date)
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RNs except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (required for ED/ER RNs only)
  • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap of 6+ months between assignments or module updated)
  • Fire Safety Module (required as of 5/4/2026)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical Exam (within 12 months of start)
  • Fit Mask Test (within 12 months of start, must be updated annually; clean-shaven required for N95)
  • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray (acceptable tests within specified timeframes)
  • TB Questionnaire (must be updated annually)
  • Immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (or declination within 1 year)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric specialties, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum (declination accepted)
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (09/01 - 03/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred
  • 10 Panel Drug Screen (within 12 months of start)

Background & Verification Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check (must include SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended, education verification)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks (required within 30 days of start)
  • Foreign Equivalency Education Evaluation (for internationally educated candidates)
  • Education Verification (highest level of education verified; official transcripts may be required)
  • Sex Offender Search
  • Employment Application with 7-year work history and no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work History Verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
  • One supervisor reference within past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU; standard references for other units
  • Skills Checklist (within 12 months of start)
  • Attestation of Prior Radiation Exposure (if applicable to certain units)

Additional Notes

  • Floating to other units as needed
  • Parking cost approximately $125/month
  • Epic testing available and encouraged for experienced users but not mandatory for clearance
  • Various certifications (PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, CPI, NIH Stroke Certification) may be required depending on unit assignment; verify unit-specific requirements
