Registered Nurse – CVICU (Cardiac ICU) – Travel/Contract

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Position in a high-acuity Cardiac ICU (Cardio Thoracic ICU) with an average nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2 for both day and night shifts.
  • Night shift schedule: 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM).
  • Weekend work required every other weekend.
  • Floating required within scope to other high-volume cardiac ICUs.
  • Guaranteed hours.
  • Start date: ASAP.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut.
  • Minimum 3 years of CVICU (Cardiac ICU) experience, with CVICU experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Proficient with Swan-Ganz catheter monitoring.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check (including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, national sex offender, federal checks) within 12 months of start.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
  • Verification of highest level of education; foreign equivalency evaluation required for internationally educated candidates.
  • Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps greater than 90 days.
  • Work history verification for the last 7 years (attestations not accepted).
  • One supervisor reference within the past year specific to Cardio Thoracic ICU (charge nurse references not accepted).
  • Skills checklist completed within 12 months of start.
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure if applicable to certain tech roles (not RN-specific but may be relevant if cross-trained).

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) within 12 months, updated annually; must be clean-shaven for fit testing.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation as per facility standards.
  • Annual TB questionnaire.
  • Immunizations/vaccinations:
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) – positive titer or 2 vaccines required; boosters if titers low.
    • Varicella – positive titer, 2 vaccines, or physician-documented history; boosters if low titer.
    • Hepatitis B – positive titer, proof of vaccine series, or declination within 1 year.
    • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties, labor/delivery, postpartum (not required).
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sept 1 – Mar 31).
  • COVID vaccination series preferred but not mandatory.

Facility-Specific Training and Competencies

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 85% passing score) within 12 months.
  • Color blindness test required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024 (minimum 80% passing score).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for ICU RNs.
  • Language Services Training.
  • CAUTI (Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection) Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health).
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training.
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (not required for ICU).
  • Stroke Education Module (except pediatric specialties and NICU).
  • CLABSI (Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection) Prevention Training.
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training.
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education.
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Training.
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training.
  • Patient Bedside Rounding Module (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED).
  • Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Awareness Training.
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health, Home Health).
  • New Employee Orientation Module.
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RNs except Home Health).
  • ED Handbook (not applicable for this ICU role).
  • eCart Training Module (not required for ICU).
  • Chaperone Policy Training.
  • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026).
  • EPIC charting system experience encouraged; EPIC testing or training provided at orientation.

Additional Notes

  • Candidate must provide photo ID matching legal name on first day.
  • Floating to other high-volume cardiac ICUs is required.
  • This is a Level I Trauma Center with short-term acute care services.
  • Charting system used: Epic.
  • Parking cost approximately $125/month.
