Description

Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit (Night Shift)

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Shift Details

  • Unit: Step Down (Acute Care Hospital)
  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts of 12 hours (19:00 – 7:30)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients
  • Weekend Requirement: 2 shifts every other weekend (Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday for night shift)
  • Floating: May float to lower acuity floors within scope
  • Local Radius Rule: 75 miles (locals not accepted)
  • First-time travelers not accepted
  • Must have been at bedside within last 6 months

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience
  • Experience with ventilators, titration of vasopressors, sedation medications, insulin drips, tracheostomy vents, arterial lines, external pacemakers, and chest tubes
  • No prior travel experience required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (AHA only; certs of completion accepted up to 1 month)
  • BLS (AHA only; certs of completion accepted up to 1 month)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all nurses; must be updated annually)
  • Additional certifications may be required based on unit (verify during onboarding)

Licensure

  • Active Registered Nurse license for Missouri accepted (pending license accepted)
  • Primary source verification required (NURSYS for Missouri)

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide and nationwide)
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required
  • State-specific searches and registries as applicable
  • Drug testing within 1 year, including comprehensive panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone, opiates, oxycodone, PCP)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframe
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season (Sept 30 – Apr 1)

Additional Facility Requirements

  • Badge photo (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
  • HIPAA Acknowledgement, Latex Allergy Questionnaire, Confidentiality Form, Hand Hygiene Policy, Fingernail Policy, Dress Code Policy signed prior to start
  • Regulatory Compliance Education completed annually via online training
  • Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required annually
  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Employment application must be submitted and uploaded

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Step Down Unit, with at least 1 year of recent PCU experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience with titration of vasopressors/pressors
  • Experience with insulin drips
  • Experience managing tracheostomy ventilators (trach vents)
  • Experience with arterial lines (art lines)
  • Experience with external pacemakers
  • Experience with chest tubes
